“Attunement to the Universal Rhythm” of Freemasonry & “The Laws of Nature”, by Spinoza

- “….how can we find the Light that awakens the Human Mind?
“….studying Nature, observing the Phenomena, descending into the depths of Consciousness and especially harmonizing with the Universal Rhythm…”
- Spinoza, “Ethics” Part I:
Proposition 16: “From the necessity of the divine nature there must follow infinitely many things in infinitely many ways (that is, everything which can fall under an infinite intellect).”
Proposition 17: “God acts solely from the laws of His own nature, and is not compelled by anyone.”
- Spinoza, “On the Freedom of Thought – Theological-Political Treatise”:
“Indeed, just as the method in the interpretation of Nature consists mainly in systematic research on Nature and then, having certainly gathered data, we deduce from them the definitions of natural things“[1]
What is the “Universal Rhythm”?
Etymologically, in Greek the word “Rhythm” (ρυθμός) comes from the verb “ρέω” (flow), indicating a continuous and smooth flow.
The word “Universal” in the phrase “… harmonizing with the Universal Rhythm…” does not that “flows” in Solar Systems and Galaxies, the one that permeates every being in the Universe, is the immanent Universal Rhythm.
In Philosophy, Ethics, Law, the Laws of the Universe or Universal Laws refer to a system of Principles, are considered inherent in Human Nature and are rational and self-evident. Philosophy looks for answers on how to connect Universal Laws with the existence of a Creator (God) or whether they simply reveal the intrinsic structure of the Universe.
They are the rules that have not been created by humans, but simply describe the nonmaterial behavior of the Universe world.
- They are always & everywhere, and cannot be breached.
- They are references and not imposed imperatives (such as human laws).
- Examples: Law of Correspondence, Law of Cause & Effect, etc.
And what are “Laws of Nature”?
The term “Laws of Nature” refers to fundamental principles that govern the Universe and have two different aspects, depending on the relative direction, ie whether they concern Science or Philosophy.
In the Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.), the Laws of Nature are fixed and universal rules that describe how the Universe works. They are objective, necessary and universal.
- They are the rules that have not been created by humans, but simply describe the nonmaterial behavior of the Universe world.
- They are always & everywhere, and cannot be breached.
- They are references and not imposed imperatives (such as human laws).
- Examples: Law of Gravity, Law of Energy Conservation, etc.
Spinoza in his “Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect” states:
“..Therefore, we can see that it is above all necessary for us to progressively deduce all our ideas from things of natural order (aka real beings), proceeding as far as possible with the order of causes, that is, from one real being to another real being, and…” ie in order to understand higher ideas we must progressively start from things of natural order and we will approach the higher concepts by proceeding with the order of causes[2].
Of course, he considers it necessary for the “…things of natural order” to be true and authentic.
And he continues, “as is (in fact) the case with everything that exists in Nature, all things that interact with the rest will be understandable, and their objective essence will also exhibit the same interactions, in the sense that from them other ideas will be produced, which will again interact with others, and thus will multiply the tools for further progress.”
Therefore, what is required to initiate the process of approaching higher ideas is a connection to an initially true idea that will connect us to the correct order of its creation from another idea and so on, that is, it will introduce us to a grid of true ideas that is identical to the grid of causes of physical reality.
This way, the true meaning of the “circle” is the shape outlined by any line whose one end is fixed and the other movable, since from this definition all the properties of the circle can necessarily be produced, and the challenge is to gain the most accurate knowledge of the individual things that arise from it.
If, therefore, we have a true idea, such as the Geometric shape of a “circle“, through the mental process of decoding we come into direct contact with the inherent power of our mind and at the same time with the power of the mind of God, since this idea exists in the same way in God.
With this step we can rapidly approach every idea and even the perfection of ideas, the idea of the source and origin of Nature, the idea of the most perfect Being.
With a bidirectional movement, this supreme idea, provides us with the necessary order and unity of everything, in order for us to descend to the knowledge of individual things, following the order of nature in a specific way. Therefore, the method works both ways.
But how is the knowledge of even one original true idea (such as that of a circle) sufficient to lead to a higher knowledge or even to the idea of the most perfect Being, from which we will then deduce the knowledge of the essences?
The answer of the reproduction of ideas “to and from” is interesting, requires mental breadth, penetration of thought and intellectual work. This is the Spiritual Work in Freemasonry.
Operating in this way and knowing that life and matter follow the same rules – Laws of Nature & Universal Laws – and that Geometry and its symbols are “true ideas”, we have the answer “how can we find the Light that awakens the Human Mind”
“…. studying Nature, observing the Phenomena, descending into the depths of Consciousness and especially harmonizing with the Universal Rhythm…”
The “Geometric shapes” are “Nature” and are the “words” with which the Universe speaks, “flowing” within it, connecting Mathematics and Philosophy.
Geometric shapes serve as the invisible architecture of the physical world, dictating the structure of everything from the smallest particle of matter to the Galaxies and the Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) of Quantum Mechanics.
“In biology, geometry is driven by efficiency and survival. Bees build hexagonal honeycombs to maximize storage while minimizing matter, while sunflowers and shells grow in logarithmic spirals to optimize sunlight binding and structural integrity. Even within the human body, the branching of neurons and the double helix of DNA follow precise geometric constraints that ensure stability and functionality throughout life. This mathematical consequence extends to the heavens, where gravity and motion shape matter into spheres, disks, and spirals. Planets form as spheres because they represent the most energy-efficient shape under Gravity, while spiral galaxies chart near-perfect curves to maintain rotation without breaking apart. Ultimately, these repetitive shapes-from fractals in a tree to the topology of the brain-are not accidental. It is the inevitable result of physical laws seeking the most stable and scalable solutions, proving that geometry is the fundamental language of the universe.”[3]
Geometric symbols in Philosophy render philosophical concepts through shapes (e.g., Plato), linking matter to idea, with basic symbols the Platonic solids (cube, pyramid, etc.) expressing elements and cosmic order, while Geometric Philosophy was developed by philosophers such as Descartes and of course Spinoza, using the Geometric method for logical conclusions and understanding of the universe.
Geometric symbols are the tools of Masonic reconstruction
Spinoza continues in his ” Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect “:
“The method is immediate and instantaneous, as ” it is nothing else” but reflective knowledge, the idea of the idea. And as there is no idea of an idea unless there is an idea first, for this reason there will be no Method unless there is an idea first ” (TEI, 41).
And Freemasonry returns as an applied Philosophy and in the light of the Spinoza Method. Here’s the template:
